Malthouse Theatre is deeply concerned by the announcement that Australia will no longer have a Federal government department dedicated to the Arts.
Australians are creative people. If we’re not directly employed in the creative industries we are engaging with them every day - when we attend a show, read a book, listen to the radio, watch TV, or take our kids to a dance class.
It is shocking to think our Government would put this at risk by subsuming the nations’ arts portfolio into a super department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, and Communications.
Australia’s creative industries are the engine room for our national identity, our well-being, and our prosperity. We are calling on the Government to stop the cuts to the Arts and champion Creative Australians by placing them front and centre with pride.
